Tools in the Van Overnight? There Could Be a Safer Place to Store Them
Leaving tools in your van overnight? Find out how to reduce the risk of tool theft and whether container storage could work for your tools and equipment.

Why Leaving Tools in a Van Overnight Is a Risk
For many tradespeople, the van isn’t just transport. It’s where thousands of pounds’ worth of tools and equipment travel from one job to the next.
The problem comes at the end of the working day.
Do you unload everything? Leave it in the van? Carry the most expensive tools into the house? And then do it all again tomorrow morning?
Unfortunately, there’s a good reason to think about where your tools spend the night.
Is It Safe to Leave Tools in a Van Overnight?
No vehicle can be guaranteed safe from theft, and official police advice specifically highlights vans as a target because of the tools stored inside.[1]
Police.uk recommends additional precautions if tools have to remain in a van overnight, including property marking, recording serial numbers and using a lockable cabinet.
Some police forces go further. Leicestershire Police advises van owners to remove tools when vehicles are left unattended for long periods or overnight.[2]
That’s because losing your tools isn’t simply about replacing a drill or saw.
For a tradesperson, those tools may be what allows you to earn a living the following morning. A break-in can mean replacing equipment, repairing the van, dealing with insurance and potentially cancelling work while everything gets sorted.
Taking everything home isn’t always practical
Removing your tools from the van sounds simple until you’re doing it every evening.
If you’ve got power tools, toolboxes, larger equipment and materials, carrying everything into the garage or house every night quickly becomes a job in itself.
And you still need somewhere to put it all.
That’s where having a separate place for trade tool storage can start to make sense.
Instead of treating the van as permanent storage, it becomes what it was intended to be — the way you move the tools you need from one place to another.
Can I Store Work Equipment in a Shipping Container?
For many types of tools, work equipment and trade materials, a storage container can provide a practical storage option, subject to the items being permitted under the storage facility’s terms.
At Bee Storage, our containers are intended for storage rather than being used as workshops.
There’s no direct electricity or water supply to the individual containers, so they’re not designed as somewhere to set up and work throughout the day.
But for storing tools, equipment and suitable trade materials, that’s exactly what the additional space can be used for.
With access available 7am–7pm, seven days a week, you can collect the equipment you need before heading to a job and return it afterwards.

Your van doesn’t have to be your storeroom
A van full of tools can become cluttered surprisingly quickly.
Keeping equipment you rarely use alongside the tools required for every job means carrying more around than you necessarily need.
Separate storage gives you the option to organise your equipment and load the van according to the work you’ve actually got planned.
For a plumber, that could mean keeping larger or less frequently used equipment in storage.
For a builder or joiner, it might be tools and suitable materials that aren’t needed on every job.
For a decorator, electrician, landscaper or other trade, it could simply mean having somewhere away from home to keep work equipment organised.
The aim isn’t to make another trip unnecessarily.
It’s to avoid your van becoming your toolbox, stockroom and storage unit all at once.
If tools have to stay in the van
There will inevitably be occasions when removing everything isn’t practical.
Police.uk recommends measures including marking tools with your name or company details, recording serial numbers, photographing valuable equipment and considering a security-rated lockable cabinet inside the van.[1]
Avon and Somerset Police also recommends additional measures such as tool safes or van vaults, upgraded locks and alarms where tools can’t be removed.[3]
Those measures can help reduce risk, but they don’t change the basic point:
If expensive tools don’t need to stay in an unattended van overnight, it’s worth considering somewhere else to keep them.
