Moving Into Your Storage Container? Your First-Day Checklist
Moving into your storage container? Use our simple first-day checklist to prepare for your visit, organise your move-in and get your storage off to a smooth start.

Moving into your storage container is much easier when you’ve got everything ready before you arrive.
Whether you’re storing household belongings, furniture, business stock, tools or equipment, a little planning can save you from making extra trips or discovering you’ve forgotten something halfway through unloading.
Your first visit doesn’t need to be complicated. Check your access details, prepare what you’re bringing and have a rough idea of how you want to load the container before you set off.
What Should I Do Before Moving Into My Storage Container?
Start by checking the details of your booking.
Make sure you know your tenancy start date, storage location and site access arrangements before travelling to the site.
At Bee Storage, customer access is available 7am–7pm, seven days a week, so plan your first visit within those hours.
It’s also worth checking that you’ve got everything you’ll need to secure your container once you’ve finished unloading.
If you’ve purchased a padlock from Bee Storage, follow the collection instructions we’ve sent you. If you’re supplying your own lock, make sure you have it with you before arriving.
Getting these simple things sorted beforehand means you can concentrate on unloading and organising your storage when you get there.
Plan what you’re taking before you load the vehicle
Group similar belongings together and think about which items need to go into the container first.
Large furniture, bulky equipment and things you won’t need regularly will usually need to be positioned before smaller boxes and frequently accessed belongings.
Try to load your car or van with that in mind. If the first things you need inside the container are buried at the back of the vehicle, unloading quickly becomes harder than it needs to be.
If you haven’t planned the container layout yet, our How to Pack a Storage Container guide explains how to organise the space, stack boxes and keep the things you need accessible
Bring the essentials with you
A few simple things can make your first move into storage much easier.
Make sure you have your site access details, container lock or padlock key, and anything you need for unloading before you leave home or work.
Depending on what you’re moving, that might include moving blankets, straps, gloves or suitable handling equipment.
It’s also worth keeping your phone with you so you can access any booking or site information you’ve been sent and contact the Bee Storage team if you need help.
Most importantly, don’t rush heavy or awkward items. Plan how they’ll be moved before you start unloading and get help where necessary.
Check your container before you start unloading
When you reach your container, take a quick look inside before you start bringing everything over.
Make sure you’ve got the right container and that you’re happy with the space before filling it.
This is also your last chance to think about the layout while the container is completely empty.
Decide where large items will go, which belongings need to remain accessible and whether you want to leave a route through the container.
Five minutes spent planning at this point can save a lot of rearranging later.
Load with the things you’ll need later in mind
As you start loading, think beyond simply getting everything through the doors.
Put heavier and bulkier items in stable positions first, with lighter boxes and belongings arranged around them.
If there are things you’ll need regularly, keep them somewhere accessible rather than burying them at the back.
For personal storage, that might be important boxes, seasonal belongings or items you’ll need during a house move.
For business storage, it could be tools, equipment, fast-moving stock or packaging supplies.
Labelled boxes and a simple access route can make a big difference once the container starts filling up.

Secure your container before you leave
Once you’ve finished unloading, take a quick look around before locking up.
Make sure nothing is obstructing the container doors, boxes and belongings are stable, and you’ve taken everything you need with you.
Close the container properly and secure it with your padlock.
If you’ve purchased a padlock from Bee Storage, keep your key somewhere safe after collection. You’ll need it whenever you return to access your container.
Before leaving the site, it’s worth taking a quick photo of your finished container layout. That can give you a useful reminder of where different belongings are stored.
